The winter months can get pretty bitter. And so can you when your toes and fingers are numb. To my knowledge, no one likes to freeze their butt off. It’s just not pleasant. I guess the real concern at-hand here is; how do you plan to keep warm? Well obviously you’re going to bundle up when you venture outdoors into the snowy mess, but I was referring to inside your home. Are all the rooms warm and cozy? Does the central heat kick-on redundantly throughout the day and night? Maybe what you need is an alternative heating source. Possibly a woodstove or modern fireplace. These make a wonderful addition to any home.

I’ve always been a wood burning kind of guy myself. When it comes to the modern fireplace, I still avoid gas and electric models. Maybe it’s because I grew up with a woodstove in my home, and enjoyed how well it heated our large house. Then again, I could prefer a wood-burning fireplace over a gas one simply because I’ve had both, and the gas version put out less heat. This is a big deal, if you ask me. Naturally I want my fireplace to warm the place up. But that’s not all I want it to do. There’s also the ambience factor. Not much compares to sitting next to a crackling flame with a marshmallow stick in-hand. I can watch the wood burn furiously, while I enjoy a smores or roasted hotdog. That’s living folks! And just because you prefer a modern fireplace, doesn’t mean that it can’t be a traditional wood-burning fireplace. Much has to do with the hearth. You can have one installed with the rock, stone or brick texture and color of your choice. There is really no limit to the possibilities now days.

Although the wood-burning fireplace is a blast for some of us, it won’t be for everyone. Many will prefer a more modern fireplace that can be lit at the flip of a switch. Well, with a gas or electric fireplace, you can have this. It’s just like switching on a light. And just so you know, an electric fireplace will cost you less than most gas models. You can pick up one of these modern fireplaces at Lowe’s or Home Depot. Enjoy the warmth.

When it comes to fireplaces, there are three main types of units that you can choose from including fireplace inserts, zero clearance fireplaces and freestanding fireplaces. Below is a brief description of these types of fireplaces. This article will also discuss some of the common fireplace styles that many are using to design their homes.

Types of Fireplaces

The fireplace insert is specifically designed for being installed in an existing fireplace location. This is the best option to changing your fireplace to another fuel source. The most popular option for many in gas fireplace inserts.

Zero clearance fireplaces are specifically designed for those who have minimal space between the fireplace and combustible materials like studs and wallboard.

Lastly, there are freestanding fireplaces, which are perfect for places where you need supplemental heating such as basements.

Fireplace Styles

Fireplace manufacturers are staring to offer more styles and features to their fireplace options in order to meet consumer demands and in an effort to offer more than their competitors do. The most popular styles of fireplaces today are the corner fireplace and the see through fireplace. However, consider some of the more popular options below so you can find a design that interests you or works well with your home design.

The first is an outdoor fireplace, which is an excellent addition to a location where the family and friends can gather. The most popular option is the outdoor brick fireplace which can also increase the marketability and value of your home should you choose to sell.

The second option is the corner fireplace, which is perfect for smaller living spaces such as apartments, condominiums, lofts or single-family homes. A corner fireplace will make the perfect focal point of a room. A corner electric fireplace also provides a very convenient installation point.

Next is the multi-sided island fireplace. With this option, you get a style that is attractive as well as functional. These fireplaces will effectively radiate heat in multiple directions due to the open four-sided design of the fireplace.

Then there is a see thru fireplace, which can provide a unique barrier between two main rooms or a gathering location. With this option, you get not only a room divider, but you also get two beautiful fireplaces for the price of one.

Alternatively, consider the peninsula gas fireplace, which gives you a dramatic design that is visually appealing with three open viewing sides as well as a very energy efficient heating option.

Lastly, there is the fireplace stove option. This will provide your home with a traditional appearance that will last for many generations to come.

No matter which type or style of fireplace you choose you will be making an excellent addition that adds to the value of your home. Take the time to carefully consider all your options and choose a design that both works with your home and is a pleasing choice that shows off your unique style. With so many options to choose from you are sure to find the perfect choice.

About the Author:

Coordinated Fireplace and Hearth Products are the Secret To Making Your Fireplace the Focal Point of Your Room

By nature, fire places attract attention to an area, which is a reason the hearth is a common gathering point for so many people. The addition of a couple of wall sconces on each side of the mantle is a wonderful way to draw attention to your fireplace. But for a truly unified look that can’t help but make the fireplace mantle the focus of your room, try using coordinated fireplace hearth products made of similar materials and decoration. Log holders, accessories, firescreens, rugs, and wood baskets can be coordinated to unify the hearth space and make it the envy of all your guests.

Firebacks

Even though firebacks were popular throughout the 18th century in North America, they were actually invented in Europe with roots going much further back. But, in both the New and Old World, their popularity faded to all but collectors and true fireplace fanatics. However with energy costs sky rocketing to record breaking levels, everyone is looking to extract more of their heating needs from different sources like fireplaces, although they’re also looking for the most effective fireplace available. Fireplace firebacks are constructed with cast iron and retain heat (and therefore provide warmth to the room) for a long time after a fire has burned out.

Fireplace Grates

Fireplace grates are a requirement if you like to burn a wood fire in the fireplace. The grate is elevated above the surface of the hearth floor to allow air to feed the flame from underneath. It also alllows the ashes from the burning wood to fall so they do not smother the flame. When picking a grate for the fireplace it is extremely important to measure your fireplace opening correctly. You’ll need the width of your fireplace opening in the back and front (if it tapers) plus the depth of the opening to find the perfect fireplace grate. Allow a 1 to 2 inch clearance on each side.

Hearth Accessories

The amount of fireplace accessories on the market for the fireplace hearth seem only to be limited by your creativity with some of the more popular choices being: wood holders, firesets, and firescreens. But do not forget about the other accessories such as fireplace rugs that can add extra pleasure to your evening in front of the fireplace. They are also good presents for people who have everything already. Who couldn’t use a fireplace bellow ?

Fireplace Tools

What fireplace hearth isn’t more complete with some fireplace tools neatly placed to the side? While people may use them just as a stylish element in a room, firesets are some of the most necessary fireplace accessories especially if you plan on burning a real wood fire in your fireplace. In general, fireplace tool sets come with a poker, tongs, a broom, and a shovel. Everything that’s necessary in order to keep the fire burning and the hearth clear of wood debris. Keep in mind, not all fireplace tool sets are created equal. You will find a huge selection of styles, materials, finishes, and prices. If you’re looking for a tool set that is reliable enough to last a long time, then a wrought iron or brass set will be the way to go. Once you have chosen the level of quality you are looking for, then decide on a finish that will go with the rest of your other decor.

Fireplace Screens

While we all love to sit and relax by our fireplace after working hard all day, the truth is that our hearth space is an extremely dangerous placeparticularly for those of us who have both kids AND animals! Trapped gases inside the wood might cause sparks to fly from your fire. Wrought iron fire screens are necessary to safeguarding your family and house from the hazard of flying embers. They’re essential, but when coordinated correctly with your decor, it adds an individual sense of character and style to the space. So while you can get the standard screen for the fireplace that simply protects your floors and family, you can also match and coordinate the design features with the other decorations in the house for a more distinctive and full look. With that in mind, fireplace screens become decorations in their own sense.

Log Baskets and Wood Holders

Keep your firewood stored neatly with a log basket or log holder. These popular accessories for the fireplace typically appear to be more ornamental than practical, and many people use them to store their favorite magazines. But don’t undervalue the functionality of the wood basket. Lets face it, if you are burning a wood fire, where do you plan to hold your wood for the evening? Wood holders have a built in handle so you will be able to take them to your wood pile for an easy refill when needed. Standing log holders generally have a detachable log tote made of thick cloth or leather that can also be used to easily move your logs from the log pile to the log holder. Match the design and finish with your other fireplace accessories for a more complete look.

For more information and tips on fireplace gloves or fire glass screens, please visit FireplaceScreensEtc.com and sign up to receive a FREE Quick Guide to buying appropriate fireplace accessories for your home.

About the Author:

Fireplaces come in many shapes and sizes. There are also different types of fireplaces, including Wood Fireplaces, Gas Fireplaces, Electric Fireplaces, Traditional Fireplaces, Stone Fireplaces

Wood Fireplaces

There used to be a time when the most suitable material for the fireplace and the mantel was marble, stone, or simple bricks and mortar. Nowadays, many houses substituted it with wood, or have a significant amount of wood fitted in and around it. Wood fireplaces can enhance beauty and warmth to a home on top of being energy efficient. Wood fireplaces are now available in a wide assortment of designs from modern to rural and everything in between. The newest designs include multi-view wood fireplaces, wood fireplaces with unique surrounds and mantels and see-through wood fireplaces.

Gas Fireplaces

Gas fireplaces are an outstanding options to wood burning fireplaces. They offer the warmth and comfort of a fire without splitting, hauling, or stacking wood. They are low-maintenance appliances that’s why a lot of people buy them. Gas fireplaces are growing popular significantly each year. The popularity of gas fireplaces is growing substantially every year. The high demand for gas fireplaces has produced a spike in production.

Stone Fireplaces

This other type of fireplace has one of the most traditional looks. A stone fireplace can look gigantic with large stones reaching up the chimney to the room’s ceiling, or it can look fragile with a white, carved stone fireplace surround. The stone fireplace can fit into any fashion of decorating. It can also bring a natural texture and color into a room. Stone fireplaces are usual in older and newer homes. The size of the fireboxes will establish the size of the fireplace needed. The firebox is the interior where the fire will be burning. Older stone fireplaces did not come with doors, but with screens.

Cast Iron Fireplaces

Those who have homes with very little room for a fireplace will like the cast iron fireplaces. This type can be put up in a home using just a cement slab, the size of the fireplace and a fire proof stone wall at the back. It will require venting into a chimney, or outside, according to your municipal codes. Cast iron fireplaces and stoves are perfect for small areas. Cast iron fireplaces create a smokeless fuel fire so they are appropriate for interiors.

Traditional Fireplaces

The most recognizable type of fireplace is the typical “wall-mounted” design found in living rooms, dens, and even bedrooms. It may be consisted of brick, cement, stone, ceramic, or some mixture of these materials. The opening will typically be covered with a metal or glass screen of some type. Fireplaces of this kind often are surrounded by an exterior mantle, which can be made of wood, stone, brick, marble, metal, or some other material. Mantle styles can vary from unadorned to stylish to ornate to fanciful. Due to their importance, they often set the decorative tone for the whole room. Mostly they use wood for fuel, but some can also burn peat, coal, and other materials. Fireplaces of this type are not for the most part energy-efficient.

About the Author:

An electric fireplace heater is an excellent combination of attractiveness and functionality. When looking to add a decorative touch to a room, choose an electric fireplace heater for warming the temperature and adding coziness to a room, opposed to an ordinary space heater. Electric fireplace heaters simulate the look of a fireplace, but clearly do not actually burn gas or wood like a traditional fireplace. As a result, here are no added inconveniences or expenses from storing firewood or installing gas lines into your home.

You might ask yourself a few questions about fireplace heaters. How exactly does a fireplace heater work? Well, the heat generated from a fireplace heater comes from electricity, so there is no need for a chimney to vent fumes or smoke like a traditional fireplace. Instead, the heat radiating from the electric fireplace heater is completely clean and free of all unhealthy or unclean material that comes from a fireplace such as smoke, carbon monoxide, soot, and creosote. As a heater, an electric fireplace is also very efficient; all the heat is released directly into the room instead of escaping up a chimney. Unlike central air or heating, which would wastefully heat an entire home, an electric fireplace only warms the immediate room where heat is needed. For pennies, one can use a fireplace heater to economically, conveniently, and efficiently warm a room.

Now think about it, why would I want a fireplace heater, how will it help me? The visual appeal of a fireplace is universally known. Traditional fireplaces are most likely limited to large homes that can accommodate additional space and the chimney necessary for installation. With an electric fireplace heater it is possible to have a fireplace where they would not normally be found. For example, places that would not be able to accommodate a fireplace would be a condo, an apartment, a small house, an office, a high rise building, a boat, or an RV, and can now enjoy the warm glow of a fireplace. The look of an electric fireplace heater is surprisingly realistic. The electric fireplace heater has light bulbs to simulate the smoldering of a fire right down to the glowing embers.

The last thing that concerns the general consumer is installation. Installation of an electric fireplace heater is extremely easy. Most electric fireplace models will run on a standard 120-volt home electrical circuit with no need of special wiring. It is simply a matter of positioning the unit and plugging it in for fast and easy warmth. There is no need for difficult construction to install our electric fireplace heaters; just a nearby electrical outlet! Unlike a traditional fireplace, an electric fireplace heater is also totally portable. It would be very easy to move the electric fireplace heater from one part of the room to another if you did not like where the electric fireplace was positioned or if you wanted to focus the heat output to another part of the room. Also, once you light a fire in a traditional fireplace, you have very little control over the amount of heat coming from the fireplace. With an electric fireplace heater the heat settings are completely adjustable. You have control to adjust an electric fireplace to send out minimal or maximum heat, depending on your preference. Also you have the option of turning off the heating function and using your electric fireplace heater simply as a decorative item!

About the Author:

While we all love the sight of a roaring hot fire there are lots of different fireplaces that you will find. These many different fireplace designs are in their own way quite lovely to look at. You will see many great looking designs for fireplaces in old homes and also in stores that design and build these fireplaces.

The main fireplace designs that we are acquainted with are those of the large square fireplace type. You will however find other types of fireplaces. The design shapes of some these fireplaces can be in the modern look of electric fireplaces. With these fireplaces you will find that a small cubicle has been made in the wall. The cubicle is square in design shape.

The various wires that are needed to connect this fireplace to the electricity mains will be located behind the fireplace. You will also find that the front face of the fireplace resembles logs. This is just one of the fireplace designs that will enhance the look of your living room without having to worry about the possibility of ashes. You can also look for other fireplace designs in catalogs for your home.

While looking for various fireplace ideas is one of the best ways to choose the type of fireplace you would like to sit before you will need to think about some other matters first. The first detail you will need to consider is whether you wish to have a wood burning fireplace or a gas fireplace. You can even think about installing an electrical fireplace. This decision needs to be at the top of your plans for fireplace designs.

The next item that you should think about is where you will need a fireplace. Also in what section of the room should the fireplace be installed? While these questions may seem trivial there are good reasons for having these questions answered before you start the building process. The main reason is simply having an idea about the dimensions you require your new fireplace to have.

Sometimes when you are looking at the many fireplace designs that abound you will see brick fireplaces with jutting out mantels made of faux wood. At other times you will see fireplaces that have never been used – these fireplaces are lined with white marble – they are merely for decorative purposes. Other fireplace designs that are now in use are tile fireplaces.

The tiles that are selected for these fireplaces are very beautiful. They help to reflect the fire and the heat in a way that we will find comforting. These are just a few of the many fireplace designs you will find. As you search for the perfect fireplace for your home take a moment to think about the look and feel you want from a fireplace and then you will know which of the fireplace designs to look for.

About the Author:

Winter means bad weather in many parts of the United States. And bad weather means power failure for many people. In cold weather be prepared to use your fireplace or woodstove to keep your home warm until your power is restored. What do you need to do to be prepared? Here we will review what you need to do in preparation along with what to do in the midst of the power failure and also after the power has been restored.

Be Prepared! Long before you lose your power you need to be ready for it. You never know when the power will go out (or how long before you get your power back). Here’s your To Do List for preparing your fireplace before the power failure:

Ø Stock up on whatever fuel source you use in your fireplace or woodstove. If it is wood, make sure you have split and stacked it properly allowing for good air circulation while keeping it dry so it will age properly. This will allow your fire to burn hotter and minimize the buildup of creosote while making it easier to start and maintain your fire. Also have a good supply of kindling on hand such as Fatwood.

Ø Make sure your fireplace or woodstove is in good working order. If you are not sure, call in a professional to have it inspected. You may have to use your alternative heat source non-stop for many days.

Ø Have quality fireplace tools, fireplace screen and fireplace accessories. You will be using them ALOT! If you don’t have them, invest in them NOW! They will make your job significantly easier and fire building safer. Here are some key fireplace items and why you need them:

§ Fireplace Tools (Shovel, Poker, Tongs and Brush) – helps in the ease of building and maintaining fires and the cleaning of the fireplace after use. Much safer than trying to reposition burning logs with your hands!

§ Fireplace Screen – critical item to prevent embers from flying out of the fireplace and still allow that necessary heat to flow into the room. You want to prevent starting a house fire caused from a spark flying out of the fireplace and landing in the room.

§ Fireplace Bellow – building a fire is critical when you have a power failure and you do not want to be struggling to get it started. Fireplace bellows easily provide the oxygen rich air that helps to get that fire going. A good flow of air is critical for a successful fire.

§ Fireplace Andirons – It was discovered many centuries ago that if your fuel material is up off the ground the fire burns better and with less smoke. Andirons keep your logs off the floor of the fireplace and the vertical front piece of the andirons hold the logs in place and prevent them from rolling out of the fireplace. Fireplace grates can also accomplish this task.

§ Fireplace Log Holder – this will allow you to keep extra logs by the fireplace. The fewer times you have to open the door to the outside to get more wood the better. Every time you open the door you are letting cold air into the house. Keep it to a minimum by stocking logs in your fireplace log holder.

Get these items stocked and in place before a power outage so you can build the easiest, best fire possible when it is critical to have one.

Ø Practice building a great fire before the power failure:

§ Make sure your damper is open

§ Place tinder (crumbled paper perhaps) on the fireplace floor between the andirons. This is material that will catch fire instantly.

§ Place kindling such as Fatwood on top of the tinder. This is material that will catch fire from the flames of the tinder.

§ Stack several fire logs on top of your fireplace andirons or fireplace grate making sure that everything is spaced about 1/2" apart to allow for good air circulation. Your burning kindling will start the logs burning.

§ Light the tinder with a long match If you have a problem with back draft (smoke flowing into the room instead of up the chimney), open a window a little before you start the fire to create a flow of air from the outside to inside and up your chimney. Once the fire has started and the smoke is going up the chimney close the window.

§ If the flames are not taking off don’t forget to use your fireplace bellow to help the fire get going

§ Keep it going by adding wood from your fireplace log holder as needed and keep the burning logs stacked properly by using your fireplace tools to reposition the logs as they burn down and shift. When not working on the fire keep your fireplace screen in place to prevent fire embers from entering your room.

Your power is out. Now what?

Ø Close off rooms you do not need to use. The more areas closed off the better. Let the fire heat only the rooms you need.

Ø Build that fire and keep it going.

Ø Fill containers with water and place on your fireplace hearth near the fire. This is a great source of hot water for multiple uses while your power is out and your water pipes are running cold. If you are using plastic containers make sure they are placed where they will not melt.

When the power comes back on:

Ø You may want to continue your fire as your heating system begins to heat the whole house. Keep in mind if you have only one thermostat and it is in the heated area then you will want to open the doors to the closed off rooms so the heater will kick on. If this does not cause your heater to start you may need to raise the setting on the thermostat to above room temperature to get it to start.

Ø Once the need for your supplemental fireplace heat has ended let your fireplace cool completely (this may be longer than 24 hours) before you clean your fireplace using your fireplace tools and prepare it for its next use.

There you have it. With some good preparation, the next time you have a power failure you will be prepared to use your fireplace to stay warm. Whether it is a few hours to over a week before you get power back on (depending on how wide spread the outage) if you have prepared properly you will have heat.

CAUTION!! Do not bring into your home or garage BBQs, gas fueled generators, or any other heat generating devices that are designed for outdoor use. People have died from the undetected gases given off by some of these devices. Please use caution and be safe when you lose your power and need heat.

About the Author:

Fireplaces are found in homes across the world in all countries that witness severe cold during the winters and rains. A cozy and warm fire in the fireplace is enough to warm anyone’s heart on a chilly cold day or night. Traditionally built with either stone or brick, these fireplaces had brick faces and wooden mantels with ornate and carved designs on them. The entire fireplace could take up an entire wall of the room. This was considered all right as rooms too were large sized.

Creating a rustic charm

Brick fireplaces are generally found in great numbers in rural houses and cottages in the countryside. With winters being severe and no gas or electricity to provide heat and warmth, fireplaces were an important structure in every home. These fireplaces usually had a wooden mantel, which was decorated with carvings or with other prized treasures by the members of the house.

Since the fireplace was generally considered as the place where all the family members gathered, one finds many old paintings, which feature a brick fireplace when depicting a village scene or portrait.

Brick fireplace designs

Brick fireplaces were designed and built along with the other structures in the house. There are few examples of houses, which added a brick fireplace later on. A brick fireplace also meant a chimney as an outlet for the smoke and soot that was generated from the fireplace.

Any thing wrong with the fireplace meant that the room could be filled with soot that could darken the room and make it difficult to clean up the place. The size of the room and its location were considered before a fireplace could be built.

Replacing a brick fireplace

When wood was the only available material for burning, fireplaces were much in demand. Hence the idea of replacing a fireplace would never arise in the first place. But the invention of gas and electricity led many households to stop using and building brick fireplaces and adopt newer ways of heating up the room. Newer cities and towns also adopted gas and electricity and brick fireplaces came to serve a mere decorative purpose rather than a functional use.

Building a fireplace

If you were the kind of person who likes the old world charm of a country house, you would want to have a fireplace in your home. A fireplace is sure to provide warmth and heat and is a great place for a family get-together or an evening party with friends. You can build a fireplace in your house if you already don’t have one.

What to do before you build a fireplace

Before you begin building a fireplace, you must find out if your house can have a fireplace in the first place. You need to get the necessary permissions from Building Regulations authorities or from anyone else that would be concerned with smoke bellowing out of the chimney of your house.

Once you ensure legalities are in place, you need to find out if a fireplace can actually be built in your house. Since fireplaces take up a lot of space, you must make sure that the fireplace looks like a part of your room and not otherwise.

Materials for building a fireplace

Brick and stone fireplaces need materials such as concrete, bricks and stone besides chisels, hammer, mortar mix, grates and surrounds, water and a professional to help you build the fireplace and the chimney. Most old houses would have traces of a fireplace. You can build the fireplace at the same location.

In case there exists an outlet for the chimney as well, the job becomes easier. If you can find a chimney but no grate available, all you would need to do is to get a professional to install a grate and a sweep to advise you on cleaning it up. In case the fireplace has been blocked, a builder is the right person to advise you.

Replacing a brick fireplace

You can also build a new fireplace in the place of an old one. Using materials like cast iron and supplying gas and electricity, you can combine the rustic charm of a fireplace with clean and easy maintenance. Replacing old fireplaces can be done easily with minimum destruction of existing wall and with the help of professional builders and designers.

About the Author:

Although most of today’s homes no longer rely on a fireplace for heating purposes, they are still in high demand. Fireplaces will always have a special allure. The vision of cozying up in front of a roaring fire, mug of hot chocolate in hand, while snow falls gently outside the window or sitting in front of a rippling fire while you and your beloved spend a romantic evening together are two appealing scenarios that may come to mind when thinking of a fireplace. If you live in a small home, apartment or condominium, you may not have the luxury of a built-in fireplace. However, today you can purchase a fireplace that would fit into even the smallest of spaces. There are various options to choose from.

These include:

Virtual/Digital fireplaces

Compact fireplaces

Wall-mounted fireplaces

Tabletop fireplaces

Whether your style leans more toward modern, contemporary or anywhere in-between, one of the above-mentioned fireplaces would suite it perfectly.

Electric or Gel Fuel Fireplaces

When looking into purchasing a fireplace for your small space, you will discover that some use gel fuel and others electric. The advantages are both are eco-friendly, do not require venting or special hook-ups and are clean and odor-free. However, you may want to consider the cost and convenience of both before making a particular small space fireplace purchase.

Gel Fuel

Each gel fuel can lasts approximately 3 hours. They come in a case of twenty-four and cost $65 on average. By doing the calculations, it can be determined that one case of gel fuel will last around 72 hours. Due to the cost, most retailers will inform you that small fireplaces that run on gel fuel are mainly for decorative purposes rather than heating.

Electric

The advantage of purchasing a small fireplace that runs on electricity is the ease of use. It is also unnecessary to spend your valuable time (not to mention gas), to make trips to the store to get what is required to keep the fireplace going. The disadvantage is that your electric bill may increase significantly. However, this can be remedied by monitoring the amount of time the fireplace is in use.

Virtual/Digital Fireplaces for Small Spaces

Many may not consider a virtual fireplace as a serious fireplace option. However, before it is written off completely, it should be noted that today’s technology has brought the virtual fireplace a long way from the mock fireplaces of yesteryear. Today’s virtual fireplaces are basically a DVD that you put into your television or personal computer that creates a realistic illusion of a crackling fire. The DVD loops around and plays continuously until you turn it off.

Depending on your expectations, you may find yourself disappointed either by the quality of the video or that it is just not “real” enough for you. However, a virtual fireplace is perfect for small spaces. If you have room for a television or computer, you are already one step closer to having a fireplace. It may only be a facsimile of the real thing, but it is worth looking into if you have limited space and you want to add an ambiance of romance or the warm cozy feel that a real fireplace adds to any room.

Compact Fireplaces Made for Small Spaces

A normal size fireplace is around 40-50 inches wide. Those in the range of 25-35 inches wide would classify as a compact or small fireplace. Most traditional fireplaces are available only in floor models. Compact fireplaces are wonderful space savers as many are designed as corner units.

Wall-Mounted Fireplaces Perfect for Small Spaces

Wall-mounted fireplaces obviously take up no floor space. For that reason alone, a wall-mounted fireplace would be considered the ultimate in space saving design. If your style in décor is traditional, you may have difficulty finding a wall-mounted fireplace to suite your taste as most have a contemporary look and feel. However, as wall-mounted fireplaces increase in popularity, it is probable that the selection will grow offering more variety in design.

Tabletop Fireplaces Uniquely Designed for Small Spaces

Tabletop fireplaces are in one word “unique”. If you are not wanting a floor model or wall-mounted fireplace, but you desire a small fireplace that is not only fun, but also out of the ordinary, then a tabletop fireplace may be just what you are searching for.

From a smokeless glass-fire tabletop fireplace made specifically to enhance the view of the dancing flames to a contemporary tabletop fireplace with stainless steel logs mounted on a slate base, these small scale fireplaces are miniature works of art that are bound to be great conversation starters.

Today, there are various options to choose from to have a cozy romantic fireplace in even the smallest of spaces. From compact, wall-mounted, tabletop, to a virtual/digital fireplace, there is sure to be one to suite any home or even office décor.

About the Author:

Many different fireplace tools are used when it comes to building and maintaining fires in home fireplaces and each one of these tools has a different story to be told as to how they came to appear on your fireplace hearth. This history will deal with the andiron, bellows, pokers and fireplace screens. Also included with fireplace tools are shovels, tongs, brushes but it is rather hard to determine how and when these particular tools began to be used.

To begin our discussion let’s start with the definition of tool. This is a device that provides a mechanical advantage in accomplishing a physical task. Archeology has determined that man was using various tools from the beginning of our existence. A tool can be as simple as a stick used to poke at something to reach and move it.

Fireplace Poker

With that in mind let us start our exploration of the history of fireplace tools with the poker. A poker, also known as a stoker, is a short, rigid rod, used to move the burning material in a fire. Today’s fireplace pokers are usually made of metal with a point at one end for pushing burning material and a handle at the other end. Archeology shows that we have used pokers as a fireplace tool since the Paleolithic period. This period is the prehistoric era noted for the development of the first stone tools. It covers the period from 2.5 or 2.6 million years ago until around 10,000 BC with the introduction of agriculture. It represents the greatest portion of human time on Earth (about 99% of human history). Archeologist think that fireplace pokers were invented right after the discovery of fire (790,000 years ago) and the earliest pokers were most likely of the same material as the fuel for the fire – that is wood. At the beginning the fireplace poker, or "firestick" was probably a large branch of some type used to help keep the fire going.

Down through the ages this fireplace tool has evolved and, as other tools were used, the fireplace poker has gone in and out of favor. Up to the 17th century in England you might find only a fire fork and andirons for the fireplace but by the 19th century a fireplace poker was always used and the fire fork had almost disappeared.

The first successful mass production of pokers as a part of an entire fireplace set was designed and manufactured in Cape Girardeau, Missouri by the RL Hendrickson Manufacturing Corporation in 1898. From that time until now the poker is almost always considered a part of the assemble of fireplace tools.

"By fire-irons…the housekeeper and the ironmonger understand a fire-shovel, poker and pair of tongs. These implements were not all of them found upon the ancient hearths of this country; nor were they all necessary when wood was burned upon a fire-place…The use of pit coal, and of close fire-places, let to the adoption of the poker now in universal requisition." Robert Hunt, A Treatise on the Progressive Improvement and Present State of the Manufactures in Metal, 1853.

Fireplace Andirons

An andiron is a horizontal bar upon which logs are laid for burning in an open fireplace. Andirons usually come in pairs. They hold up the firewood so that a draft of air can pass around it and allow proper burning and less smoke. Andirons stand on short legs and are usually connected with an upright guard.

As man began to study fire and its properties in earnest it was discovered that allowing the circulation of air around the fire led to better fires. Because of this discovery andirons became more and more popular. In the 16th to 18th century AD they were also used as a rest for a roasting spit or to hold porridge.

Before the 14th century andirons were almost always forged from wrought iron and were very plain. During the period of the Italian Renaissance (14th to 17th centuries AD) many ordinary objects of the household came to the attention of artists and design and skill were used to product andirons. The andiron reached its most artistic development under Louis XIV of France (late 1600s). The guard (the upright portion of the andiron) was elaborately ornamented. Patterns consisted of heraldic symbols, sphinxes, grotesque animals, mythological creatures and much more.

Sometimes andirons were referred to by the creature they portrayed. One example of this that continues to this day is firedog. Andirons that portrayed dogs were called firedogs. This plays on the dual meaning of the word dog (canine and inanimate holder). In some areas firedog began to be used to refer to any andiron. In the United States andiron was once used only in the North and dog iron, firedog or just dog was used to identify andirons in the South. The Southern term is still used in that region but andiron is now used everywhere.

"Fire-lighting, however simple, is an operation requiring some skill; a fire is readily made by laying a few cinders at the bottom in open order; over this a few pieces of paper, and over that again eight or ten pieces of dry wood; over the wood, a course of moderate-sized pieces of coal, taking care to leave hollow spaces between for air at the centre; and taking care to lay the whole well back in the grate, so that the smoke may go up the chimney, and not into the room. This done, fire the paper with a match from below, and, if properly laid, it will soon burn up; the stream of flame from the wood and paper soon communicating to the coals and cinders, provided there is plenty of air at the centre." Isabella Beeton, Book of Household Management, 1861.

Fireplace Bellows

The bellow is a mechanical device for creating a jet of air. It usually consists of a hinged box with flexible sides, which expands to draw air in through an inward opening value and contracts to expel the air through a nozzle.

The bellow was used extensively in medieval Europe (5th to 16th century). It was used to speed combustion for a blacksmith and later to operate pipe organs. One of the simplest and most familiar types of bellows is the manual one used with fireplaces. The expandable chamber consists of a leather bag with pleated sides. The bag is fixed between handles to expand and contract. The inlet and outlet vents are provided with values so that air must enter through the first and leave through the second. Thus the fireplace bellows becomes a simple air pump.

When we think of fireplaces we usually think of these simple bellows. But bellows have had a major role in history. Metal smelting was not possible until after the invention of the bellows which made the fore possible. Bellows deliver additional air to fuel and raise the rate of heat output which is needed for smelting. Around 3000 BC hand operated bellows were used for metal smelting (bronze). The first evidence of iron smelting is around 930 BC.

Though early man did not need to get their heating and cooking fires up to the temperatures needed for smelting they did discover that fireplace bellows made fire building easier. Stoking kindling with a bellow produces a hotter flame and logs start much quicker. This is especially important when you are working with wet logs. Also, fireplace bellows were used early on to create an airstream to blow ashes out of the fireplace when cleaning.

Today fireplace bellows are still a necessary tool on the fireplace hearth. It is also a tool that many people like to design and make on their own. Many bellows are made out of beautiful wood and can have very intricate designs creating an elegant object on display by the fire.

Fireplace Screens

Though there is no exact date for when fireplace screens came into use we do know that they were first a form of furniture that shielded individuals from any excess heat that was coming from a log burning fireplace. Early fireplace screens usually were shaped as flat panels standing on attached feet, or as adjustable shield-shaped panels mounted on tripod table legs.

Today’s fireplace screens come in many decorative designs and are made out of metal, glass or wire mesh and are placed in front of the fireplace to protect the room from flying embers that may come from the fire. Sometimes they are used to cover the fireplace when not in use to make the area more decorative.

Whatever fireplace tool you use to help you build and maintain your fire, know that there is a long history behind each one of those fireplace tools and centuries of use has gone into perfecting the tool in your hand. And remember that in modern society fire has evolved from providing necessary heat and cooking to a symbol of warmth and love shared by all that gather are the fireplace hearth

About the Author:

What Is A Fireplace Blower?

A lot of people find that they enjoy their fireplace so much that they would like to use it as their primary source for heating their home. And for some people, this is something that can be done but if it is not done properly, they will find themselves having problems. The complaints that are most often expressed is that the warm air from the fireplace does not make it to the other side of the room, let alone any of the adjoining rooms. This means that unless this issue is resolved, the fireplace cannot help on saving money from gas bills.

The fix is simple and complex all at the same time because the item needed is easy to purchase but depending on how your wiring is set up in the house, it can be difficult to install. Well, maybe not difficult for those who do well with all of the different do it yourself projects, but time consuming for sure. All a fireplace needs to work more efficiently is a fireplace blower. The fireplace blower is mounted either in front of the fireplace or in a doorway facing out.

When the fireplace blower is placed in front of the fireplace, it makes sure to distribute the warm air throughout the room. But if the room is already being filled with nice warm air then you do not want to do that. Instead, install the fireplace blower facing out in a doorway so that it will push warm air into another room. This means that you are getting more heat for the wood that you are burning and in turn will save money on your heating bills. And you do not have to worry about the fireplace blower affecting your fire’s combustion rate as it was designed with everything in mind.

The only thing is that the fireplace blower will need to be powered by electric so if you do not have the proper electrical outlets near the fireplace or door frame, then some will have to be ran. If you are not a licensed electrician then you should probably call a professional in. Messing with electric when you do not know exactly what you are doing is not safe at all. The installation of a fireplace blower is not worth you risking your life. Have someone come out, run the lines, and then you can install the fireplace blower on your own.

The Importance Of Proper Fireplace Screens

There is no doubt about it, when it comes to fireplace safety, fireplace screens rank on the top of the list. It is important for everyone and every pet in the household to understand that they must stay away from the fireplace while it is burning and even for a while afterwards. This is because the hot ashes are hot enough to still cause some serious burns on people. Make sure that young children fully understand the dangers so that they can be safe from fire at home and at other places.

To make sure that everyone is safe, it is important to make sure that all of the right tools are in place and the fireplace screens are up and stable. This is to protect the family and maybe even your personal belongings so it is important to really take time everyday to check the fireplace screens. It is not enough to leave them alone once you have placed them up because over time they can move or be adjusted in ways that are not truly safe for everyone. This is true no matter which type of fireplace screens you end up going with.

Buying Screens

When heading out to buy fireplace screens, it is important to know what size you truly need to cover the fireplace. If the fireplace screens are not the right size, it will not protect the way it should and it will also look out of place. If you want an older looking screen or something used that has history with it that is fine as long as you really inspect the framework and that it is still in good working condition. If it seems too worn out, then you need to look somewhere else, no matter how pretty it is.

For something that is new, just head out to your local home improvement store, as they will have a few to pick from. Again, you are still going to need the size your fireplace requires because not all fireplaces are the same size. If you really do not like the selection you are finding there, you can always turn to auction sites or web stores for your purchase of fireplace screens although you will be stuck paying for shipping fees. But if it is something that you are going to have for a long time, you do want to make sure it is something you like so the shipping fees may be well worth it.

There is definitely something elegant and cozy that fire places add to almost any home. They are a great addition, but they are also a lot of work. Many don’t take that into consideration when they have them installed or when they buy a house that is full of them. If you don’t end up using them, you have to have them covered up. If you do use them, they require maintenance. If you don’t do anything at all with them, they can cost you money on your energy bills due to a loss of heat and drafting issues.

When you actively use your fire places, you have to remember to keep them clean. They can be a fire hazard as well, and that means you have to have someone come in to check and clean your chimney at least once a year if not more. You have to keep the ashes cleaned out, and it will add a certain aroma to your home that you may or may not like. If you don’t mind all of those things, you certainly should have fire places if you want to. However, don’t use them but ignore the upkeep or you could be putting your home in danger of burning down.

If you ignore your fire places and are not using them, you may find that you have a draft in the wintertime and that your bills are higher than they need to be. You should always have someone come in to close up your fire places if you don’t intend to use them any time soon. If you think you may use them again in the future, make sure you find someone who can close them up so you may open them again when you wish to start using them again. Some ways of closing up fire places are permanent, so make sure you are specific about what you want done.

Overall, fire places can be great additions to the home, though most only use them once in a while. Safety is an important issue, as many lose their homes to fires because they did not care for them the right way. Always have the number of a good chimney sweep company on hand, and know what to look for if there may be problems. If smoke starts backing up into your home when you use them, you may have blockage that needs to be addressed immediately.

It’s getting frigid out there! This morning I woke up and it was 15 degrees. YES! Now that’s a temperature that will wake you up when you step out that door. Watch your breath freeze in front of you as your fingers and toes begin to numb. Now, how does that feel? Okay, so it probably doesn’t feel or sound too appealing. Luckily we have great ways to keep warm. When we’re outdoors, it’s our high-tech clothing, but when we’re indoors it’s fires and fireplaces. This is what it’s all about. The forced central heat is great and all, but I prefer a nice crackling wood fireplace. These babies can pour out the heat.

You really shouldn’t dismiss a wood-burning fireplace until you’ve tried one. I hear a lot of people do this and it irks me. They go on and on about fires and fireplaces, and how it’s so much better to have gas. Okay, that’s certainly one opinion. I don’t dislike a gas or electric fireplace, but sometimes I want something more. Ah, who am I kidding? I always want something more. Something only a wood-burning fireplace can provide. Sure, gas fireplaces are appealing to most, because of the clean-up issue. You don’t have one. You simply turn on the gas and light the pilot. All it takes to start and stop your fire is the flip of a switch. I enjoyed this for several years, but then cam a time when I wanted my wood-burning fireplace back. I love the option of roasting hotdogs and marshmallows. I can curl up by popping wood and a roaring flame. This is a very relaxing way to lounge in the family room.

For those who’ve never dealt with fires and fireplaces, you should keep a few things in mind when deciding on one. If you want simplicity, aesthetics and heat, but without any hassle, then electric or gas fireplaces are perfect for you. If you want a real flame blazing before you, and don’t mind a little cleanup, then maybe you’d prefer a wood-burning fireplace. Just to give you an idea, when you go with wood-burning fires and fireplaces, you will need wood and you will have to scoop ashes regularly. But, these old-fashioned fireplaces are cheaper now days. The price of gas has gone up, while wood is still fairly inexpensive.
